Aljaz Bedene: the LTA need to provide clarity and consistency when it comes to representing GB

With the recent news that top-100 tennis player Aljaz Bedene is looking to switch nationality to GB, the old debates surrounding national eligibility resurfaced – what determines someone’s nationality? Is residency enough? If you’ve previously represented one nation, should you be allowed to represent another? In the case of a sport such as tennis, it would be very easy to conclude that actually, it doesn’t really matter at all. For the most part, on the tour, a player’s nationality is just three letters after their name that may bring added home support should they be playing on home soil. So if Bedene wants to represent GB and is granted citizenship, perhaps we should just be flattered – and at least it’ll give us one more person to cheer for during Wimbledon fortnight each year.
